New Mexico Chupacabras vs. Tucson Sugar Skulls
For the second time in the teams' young series, the Tucson Sugar Skulls eked past the New Mexico Chupacabras on Sunday evening.
Tucson's Kevin Macias scored the first quarter's only points with a 30-yard field goal, then doubled the Sugar Skulls' lead with a 15-yard kick with 10:14 to go in the second. The teams exchanged blows after Ja'rome Johnson connected with Damon Street for a one-yard touchdown.
Kacey Otto's 11-yard air strike to Jaivian Lofton pushed Tucson (2-2) back ahead and provided a 13-6 halftime edge. Ben Derby's 15-yard field goal shaved the Chupacabras' deficit to 13-9. Macias and Derby traded field goals during the remainder of the third quarter, then Johnson connected with Keiondre Hall for a 13-yard touchdown to knot matters at 19 points apiece with 12:24 left.
Four plays later, Otto scampered eight yards to vault the Sugar Skulls back ahead. Johnson hit Isaah Crocker for his third of three passing scores with 1:29 to play, tying it once more for New Mexico (1-3). Tavion Thomas' 22-yard surge put the hosts ahead for good.
